This young violinist of outstanding ability and technique was born in Moscow, and now divides her time between France and Austria, where she studies intensively with Professor Kuschnir. In 2004 Alexandra won the Eurovision Competition for young musicians in Lucerne, and is the recipient of a number of scholarships including the presitgious Herbert von Karajan Scholarship of the Karajan Centrum in Vienna.

Alexandra's steadily growing repertoire list already includes the Beethoven concerto, Paganini nr. 1, Bruch, Glazunov, Mozart 4, Sibelius, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Bach. Her repertoire development is paralleled by the rapidly expanding list of orchestras booking her; so far including the Israel Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and the Orcheastre National d'Ile de France.

Due for release in early 2008 on the Claves label, Alexandra's debut recording will be a double concerto cd comprising the Bruch and first Paganini concerto.

Alexandra Soumm was born in Moscow in 1989 in a family of musicians. She started to learn the violin with her father at the age of five and gave her first concert two years later. In 2000, she entered the Vienna Conservatory and the Graz University of Music in the class of the eminent pedagogue Boris Kuschnir – also Julian Rachlin’s and Nikolaj Znaider’s teacher.

She won the Grand Prize of the Vienna Conservatory Competition in 2002, which enabled her to be invited as a soloist at the Vienna Konzerhaus. Alexandra was then selected by the Beracasa Foundation to perform at the Radio France Festival in Montpellier, her hometown. She also played with orchestras both in Luxemburg and in Bratislava.

In 2003, she gave a concert at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, then at the Festival of Colmar. The same year she played with the Russian National Orchestra in Berlin. In 2004, Alexandra won the 1rst Prize of the Eurovision Competition of young Musicians in Lucerne and played concerts in Austria and Germany. For the 2005/06 season Alexandra Soumm was awarded with the Herbert von Karajan Scholarship of the Karajan Centrum in Vienna. She was also awarded with the Scholarship of the Swiss BSI Bank.

Recent engagements include a debut recital at Les violons de la Paix in Boulogne-sur-Mer and a performance of Mozart Concerto No. 4 with Ensemble Orchestra de Paris conducted by Lionel Bringuier, the new assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

In 2006 Alexandra made her debut at the Martha Argerich Festival in Lugano gave concerts with the Israel Philharmonic performing Paganini Concert No. 1 conducted by Maestro Yoel Levi. Alexandra also performed at the Montepulciano, Verbier and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals, during Summer 2006.

2006 also included a return to Israel Philharmmonic Orchestra for concerts of Mozart Concerto No. 4 conducted by Yoel Levi, a New Year’s Concert with Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, concerts with Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice conducted by Frédéric Lodéon and concerts with Grazer Philharmonisches Orchester playing the Bruch Violin Concerto. In August 2007 Alexandra made her debut with the Orchestre National de Lyon and Michel Plasson, performing the Beethoven concerto, a recital at the Menton festival in France and Chamber Music performances at the 2007 Verbier Festival, alongside artists such as Joshua Bell, Leonidas Kavakos, Sayaka Shoji, Renaud Capuçon and Lawrence Power.

Recent engagements saw her debut at the Salle Pleyel performing the Paganini Concerto No. 1 with Orchestre National d'Ile de France and Mozart concerto no. 4 at the Vienna Konzerthaus with the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Barber concerto with the Montpellier Chamber Philharmonie, the Israel Philharmonic with Rafael Fruhbeck de Borgos, the Beethoven concerto with Alexander Shelley and the London Mozart Players, the Glazunov concerto with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Alexander Lazarev and the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole with the Frankfurt Radio Symphonie.

Most recently Alexandra made her debut with the Orchestre de Paris and Neemi Jarvi performing the Bruch concerto at the Salle Pleyel in Paris and her forthcoming engagements include concerts with the Gothenburg Symphoniker, the Residentie Orkest in Holland, the Tokyo Philharmonic and the Orchestre National d’Ile de France.

Released in 2008 on the Claves label, Alexandra's debut recording includes Bruch and first Paganini concerto.

Alexandra Soumm plays on a 1735 Francesco Stradivarius, kindly given to her from the firma Machold Rare Violins.
