Lise Berthaud is unanimously praised as an outstanding rising figure in viola.

At 23, she has regularly been invited on stage by such leading international artists as Augustin Dumay, Renaud Capuçon, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Eric Le Sage, Luis Lortie… and has already performed in some of France’s most prestigious concert venues (Théâtre du Châtelet, Toulouse’s Capitole, Festival International de Menton, La Folle Journée de Nantes, Festival de Deauville, Festival de Bel Air, Festival de Montpellier-Radio France, Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron,…). In 2006, Seiji Ozawa invited her to join his String Quartet academy in Switzerland with other outstanding artists from all over the world. In 2005, she had joined violinists David Grimal and Floriane Bonani, and cellist François Salque to form the Orfeo String Quartet. The quartet will present over the next seasons Beethoven’s complete string quartets cycle on several stages in France and Spain. Other regular chamber music partners include Daishin Kashimoto, Guy Braunstein, Emmanuel Pahud, Paul Meyer, Gautier Capuçon, Bertrand Chamayou, Gordan Nikollich, ….

As a soloist, Lise has been chosen by Augustin Dumay for an international tour with him in 2006 (Mozart’s Concertante). She had earlier toured with Emmanuel Krivine and the Orchestre Français des Jeunes (Berlioz’s Harold). In 2004, she premiered Marc-Olivier Dupin’s viola concerto at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Her passion for contemporary music has also lead her to collaborate with various composers, including Philippe Hersant, Thierry Escaich, Henri Dutilleux, Gyorgy Kurtag….

Lise Berthaud was born in 1982 and started studying the violin at the age of 5. As a teenager, she showed a strong preference for the vibrations of the viola, which she likes torefer to as “the king of chamber music”. She studied with Pierre-Henry Xuereb and Gérard Caussé at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and was a prize winner of the European Young Instrumentalists Competition in 2000. In 2005, she won the Hindemith Prize at the Geneva International Competition. The same year, she was chosen by Classica Magazine (a leading classical music monthly in France) for a special issue and a CD recording. In 2006, Lise was admitted to the AFAA-Radio France Declic Scheme, sponsoring outstanding young French artists.
