Nataliya Romanovna Makarova (Russian: Наталья Романовна Макарова, born October 21, 1940) is an award-winning Soviet-Russian-born American prima ballerina. She has also won awards as an actress portraying a prima ballerina in "On Your Toes."

Biography

Makarova was born in 1940 in Leningrad in former Soviet Russia. At the age of 12, she auditioned for the Leningrad Choreographic School (formerly the Imperial Ballet School), and was accepted although most students join the school at the age of 10.

Makarova was a permanent member of the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad from 1956 to 1970, achieving prima ballerina status during the 1960s. Soon after Makarova defected to the West in 1970, she began performing with the American Ballet Theatre in New York and the Royal Ballet in London.

When she first arrived in the West, Makarova was eager to expand her choreography by dancing ballets by modern choreographers. At the same time, she remained most identified with classical roles such as Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and Giselle. She was featured in the 1976 live American Ballet Theatre production of Swan Lake, simulcast from Lincoln Center on both PBS and NPR.

Makarova continued to excel in many different roles, most notably, her title role in Giselle. She was slim and slight, and combined a delicacy and lyricism with impeccable classical training. The History of Dance, published in 1981, notes that "Her performances set standards of artistry and aristocracy of dance which mark her as the finest ballerina of her generation in the West."

In 1989, Natalia Makarova returned to her home theater of the Kirov Ballet and was reunited with her family and with former colleagues and teachers. Her emotional homecoming was documented in the film Makarova Returns. After her performance at the Kirov, she retired from dancing, donating her shoes and costumes to the Kirov Museum. Today Makarova stages ballets such as Swan Lake, La Bayadère, and Sleeping Beauty for companies across the world.

In addition to being an internationally renowned ballerina, Makarova won a Tony Award for her performance in the show On Your Toes. She appeared as Lydia Lopokova (Lady Keynes) in Wooing in Absence, compiled by Patrick Garland. It was first performed at Charleston Farmhouse and then at the Tate Britain.

Personal Life

In 1976 Makarova married Edward Karkar, a businessman. Together they have a son, Andre Michael, born February 1978.

ONE OF THE GREATEST CLASSICAL BALLETS OF OUR TIME
La Bayadere ballet about the love between the Indian temple dancer Nikiya and the warrior Solor has been capturing the hearts of ballet-lovers for nearly 140 years. ‘If you don’t enjoy La Bayadère, you really don’t enjoy ballet’, said the famous dance critic Clive Barnes.

IN SHORT
Dutch National Ballet is dancing La Bayadère in the highly acclaimed version first created for the prestigious #American Ballet Theatre by former Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova, based on the original choreography by #Marius Petipa, from 1877. Although the Mariinsky Ballet (then still the Kirov Ballet) danced the famous second act of La Bayadère in London and Paris in 1961, Makarova was the first to introduce the complete ballet to the West in 1980. Since then, there have been several interpretations by other choreographers, but Makarova’s production is still regarded internationally as the most beautiful and poetic La Bayadère.

CHOREOGRAPHER/DIRECTOR
Natalia Makarova was born in St Petersburg in 1940. At the age of thirteen, she was admitted to the Vaganova Academy, where – in view of her late start and great talent – she joined a special class, in which pupils completed the course in six years, instead of the usual nine.

CREATION
La Bayadère is one of the many ‘exotic’ spectacular productions created by the French-Russian ballet master Marius Petipa between 1860 and 1880, but it is the only one that has stood the test of time. This is mainly because the love story filled with intrigues, jealousy, deceit and regret, which is situated in India, also contains extraordinarily pure classical dance, which gives the dancers every opportunity to shine. According to Makarova, on the one hand La Bayadère is a perfect example of pure classicism, while on the other it is so contemporary that it will continue forever: ‘The themes of love, passion, betrayal and revenge are timeless and will always appeal to people’.

Natalia Makarova, legendary coach
Just as in 2007, when La Bayadère was danced by Dutch National Ballet for the first time, the legendary Makarova (St Petersburg, 1940) is coming to Amsterdam in person to teach the ballet. To be coached by this legendary prima ballerina is a unique opportunity for our dancers – and in particular for our principals. In a masterclass in 2007, the public were also given the chance to watch how she managed to coax the most out of each dancer – relentlessly, but with humour.

As a dancer, Natalia Makarova quickly drew attention, which she says was partly thanks to La Bayadère. She had just joined the Kirov Ballet at the age of nineteen when she suddenly had to stand in for a colleague in the ‘parrot dance’. ‘I’d never rehearsed the part with the parrot attached to my wrist, and I made a mess of it. Afterwards, I had to go and see the director Grigorovich. I thought I’d be fired, but he said: “Okay, tomorrow you’ll start learning the double role of Odette/Odile in Swan Lake”’. From that day on, Makarova has only danced leading roles.
