Takma adı "Lady Day" olan Billie Holiday, gezgin bir müzisyen babanın kızıdır. Eğitimden yoksun geçen çocukluğu fakir bir yaşamı içeriyordu. 11 yaşındayken tecavüze uğrayınca bir katolik okulunda yatılı öğrenime verildi. Babasından boşanan annesiyle New York'a yerleşen Holiday, 14 yaşında bir kez daha tecavüze uğradı. 16 yaşındayken fahişelik yapmaya başladı. 18 yaşına geldiğinde çalıştığı kulüplerde şarkı söylemeye başladı. Aynı süreçte Aretha Franklin, Leonard Cohen gibi isimleri ünlü yapan organizatör John Hammond tarafından keşfedildi. Blues türünü kendisine yaşam tarzı edinen ve mesleğinde kısa sürede başarı elde eden Holiday, caz tarihinin en önemli seslerinden biri oldu. Şarkı sözü yazarlığı ve beste yaptı. Bir dönem uyuşturucu kullandı. Bir çok caz ve blues şarkıcısına ilham kaynağı oldu. Summertime gibi bazı yorumları klasikler arasına girdi. Sanatçı, 44 yaşındayken siroz nedeniyle hayatını kaybetti.

God Bless the Child- Billie Holiday 1952
"God Bless the Child" is a song by Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr. She first sang it in 1939.
In the movie Lady Sings the Blues Holiday indicated an argument with her mother over money led to the song. She indicated that during the argument she said the line "God Bless the child that's got his own." The anger over the incident led her to turn that line into a starting point for a song, which she worked out in conjunction with Herzog.
In this clip, many years later, Billie performs the song and is backed up by the Count Basie Orchestra

Back in your own Backyard - Billie Holiday
In New York on Janary 6 and January 12 1938 two recording sessions were organized. The first as Teddy Wilson and his Orchestra and the second as Billie Holiday and her Orchestra. A total of 12 tunes were recorded.
Buck Clayton trumpet, Lester Young tenor sax, Teddy Wilson piano, Freddie Green guitar, Walter Page bass and Jo Jones drums. Billie did the vocals. Of course I cannot show you film of Billie singing this famous classic.This morning I filmed a number of shots from our own backyard as a background to this wonderful music of Billy and her fabulous swinging musicians.

Blues from Jealousy Holiday Billy/Duke Ellington 1935

This 10 minute film from 1935 of extraordinary historic and esthetic interest features Duke Ellington at the piano presumably composing the title symphony, crosscut with shots of a band playing the music. Includes the numbers "Jealousy", and the four parts of the composition in order: "The Laborers", "A Triangle (Dance, Jealousy and Blues)", "A Hymn of Sorrow" and "Harlem Rhythm". Here on youtube we show you the second part an uncredited 18-year old Billie Holliday sings the blues while watching a couple dancing Lindy Hop in silhouette behind a window shade. Dancers are unknown. Also on the film is the eccentric dancer (that's a style, not an opinion) Earl "Snakehips" Tucker demonstrating his gifts in an appropriately surrealistic film sequence.
