Katia and Marielle Labeque
Born: Katia 11 March Hendaye, France; Marielle 6 March, Hendaye, France
Duo Pianists
Born two years apart, Katia and Marielle Labeque have performed as a duo piano team since their early student days. Their first teacher was their mother who recognised early on that her own daughters were her finest pupils and deserved the very best. So, for months every school year, Mama Labeque would take the train to Paris from the Basque coast where the family made its home to accompany the girls to their lessons at the Conservatoire. Both Katia and Mariella retain their love for this beautiful and picturesque part of France and maintain homes there.
After winning first prize at the Conservatoire, the career of The Labeque Sisters, as they became known, took off. International tours commenced almost immediately and a long association with Philips Classics commenced auspiciously with their first recording winning a Grammy right away (Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue). They have enriched the duo piano repertoire with their own arrangements and commissions.
In addition to their duo career, both Katia and Marielle enjoy flourishing solo careers. Marielle has embraced the forte-piano in particular and has toured with Muisica Antiqua Köln and Il Giardino Armonico and Katia has taken an interest in jazz with several recordings and tours to her credit. They still save a fair amount of time each year to perform as a duo with orchestras and in recital. An extensive recording discography can be found on Philips Classics.
